Week 12: 11/8 - 11/14

This week's progress:

-> Our team received the controller that we purchased from KBL and got it delivered to the controls team.

-> We are done with the new shaft design (will be presented during presentation #3). As of now, we are working on the drawing of the motor case. We went over several potential designs with Dr. Furman and we came to an agreement on one of them.

-> We are aiming to finish the CAD design for the motor case by this week. Once done, we will send the drawings to MEP for 3D printing.

-> We talked to Dr. Furman about recommendations on machine shop, and he suggested the Central Shop at SJSU's College of Engineering. We contacted Central Shop to start a service request, but we are also looking for any other potential machine shops for back-ups.

-> We looked into what material our shaft and case would be. We discussed with Dr. Furman about this, and we came to an agreement of using aluminum as the material for shaft and case. We are also thinking of using steel instead of aluminum to save budget. We are waiting for the machinist at the Central Shop to help us decide the best material for shaft and case.


Future progress:
-> Run FEA analysis on the new shaft design and motor case.
-> Finish CAD drawings for 3D print.
-> Work on Presentation #3.

Week 7: 10/03 - 10/10

On October 03, 2018: -> Following up with the projects, we met with our mentor to narrow down the motor that we are going to use for Makers Faire. Specification: - Motor type:  M12500 - 3A by MAC motor - Brushless DC hub motor - Rated Power: 600 - 1000 [W] - Rated Voltage: 36 [V] / 48 [V] - Speed: 2000 - 4000 [RPM] We are currently keeping in contact with MAC motor for more detail information, such as: - Customizing planetary gearbox - Exact dimensions of the motor - Possibly customizing shaft design and length -> We spoke with the control team to discuss KBL controller for controlling the motor speed. KBL controllers are a device that sees voltage and converts that into motor speed. -> We spoke with our mentor about our concern about the motor overheating while running at 2 miles per hour for few minutes during Makers Faire.
