2nd Semester Week 7: 03/20 - 03/27

This week motor team discovered an issue with the motor we had purchased. The BLDC hub motor with a gearbox has made the motor unidirectional. Therefore, the motor can only move in one direction. This is not a huge issue with where SPARTAN Superway is headed. We are still on track to have a working demonstration. Worst case scenario, we will have our current design move the bogie forward and up to 2 mph. We will then cut the power to the motors, have emergency braking engage to slow our system to a stop. After the system has come to a stop, we will have to reset the emergency braking system, manually push the system back to the starting position for another demonstration to occur.

Our team spoke with Dr. Furman to confirm whether it is mandatory to have the system reverse on its own. He replied that it would be nice, so we held an emergency meeting with all other full-scale to discuss our issue and proposed different solutions for all teams to vote on the best solution possible. This is a critical issue for SPARTAN Superway but not a major issue. However, it does involve changes to all teams. The solution we all agreed upon is to leave the drive bogie untouched. We will be utilizing the design and motor from Summer 2019 to help face our unidirectional problem. the slave bogie will now act as a mechanism to slow the drive bogie and reverse the bogie.

Week 7: 10/03 - 10/10

On October 03, 2018: -> Following up with the projects, we met with our mentor to narrow down the motor that we are going to use for Makers Faire. Specification: - Motor type:  M12500 - 3A by MAC motor - Brushless DC hub motor - Rated Power: 600 - 1000 [W] - Rated Voltage: 36 [V] / 48 [V] - Speed: 2000 - 4000 [RPM] We are currently keeping in contact with MAC motor for more detail information, such as: - Customizing planetary gearbox - Exact dimensions of the motor - Possibly customizing shaft design and length -> We spoke with the control team to discuss KBL controller for controlling the motor speed. 2nd Semester Week 13: 5/1-5/8

The main focus this week for the motor team was to work with bogie interaction team to integrate the motors, motor's wheels, and axle onto the drive bogie. During this integration process, both teams ran into quite a bit of an issue with manufacturing the hole on the drive bogie for the axle to be fitted into. It was originally planned so that hole sizes of approximately 1.010 inches were to be water jet cut into the four supporting plates of the drive bogie; however, bogie interaction team wasn't able to have those holes made during the water jet process. This means that we had to use a drill press to create the 1-inch holes. The problem with drilling the one-inch holes manually is that it would be quite difficult to have all four holes on the four plates to align properly for the axle to slide through.
